Commission-Combined Graduate Level Education refers to SSC CGL. It is an examination conducted to recruit employees for the vacant posts available in various ministries, organizations, and departments of the Government of India. It is conducted by SSC i.e. Staff Selection Commission and the commission selects staff for hiring Group B and Group C posts. The SSC was established in 1975.

Candidates apply for various posts and at the time of applying it is mandatory to have a bachelor’s degree from a reputed university. Age requirement is 20-30 years and the application fee is 100 rupees. The women candidates, and scheduled tribe, scheduled caste, ex-servicemen and physically handicapped are exempted from paying any kind of application fee.

Over different days the different tiers of examination of SSC are conducted and after each tier, the result is posted. For some posts, a computer proficiency test is also introduced as a tier.

The four major tiers for the exams are:

  1. Preliminary
  2. Mains exam
  3. Descriptive paper
  4. Computer proficiency/data entry skill

Preliminary is the tier 1 exam and it consists of multiple-choice questions with four options, one of which is the answer. Students need to select the correct answer for the subjects of

  1. Reasoning and general intelligence
  2. General awareness
  3. English comprehension
  4. Quantitative aptitude

In each section, one can score a maximum of 50 marks and in total 200 marks can be obtained from the four sections. Last time this examination was conducted online and the students who qualified this exam were eligible for next exam i.e. tier 2.

Mains exam is the tier 2 exam and it also consists of multiple-choice objective questions. The four sections of the paper cover the subjects:

  1. English comprehension and language
  2. Quantitative aptitude
  3. General studies: Economics and Governance, Finance and Accounting
  4. Statistics

This exam is scored for maximum 200 marks for each section. Last time his exam was also conducted online. For many positions, the candidates were asked to perform two-section only i.e. English comprehension and language and Quantitative aptitude and for certain positions rest two sections were asked to be performed.

The tier 3 exam is descriptive paper and it is an offline exam in which the candidates have to perform a writing exam in which an essay, letter, application or precis is to be written. This exam is conducted in English or Hindi.

Data entry skill test or computer proficiency test are two possible exams one of which a candidate has to give depending upon the positions applied.

  1. Data entry skill test or Data entry speed test is the exam in which candidates are given 15 minutes to enter data of 2000 key presses. For example, for the tax assistant position (Central Excise and Income Tax), this exam is mandatory.
  2. The topics of word processing, making slides and spreadsheets are covered in the exam of Computer proficiency test (CPT).

Additional exams are also introduced for certain positions and include the medical examination or physical endurance test for central police organization CPO.
